Where is Safe Anymore?

Am I Safe in my Own Home?

As my culture mission this week I decided to choose "Online Hate and Harassment: The Trouble with Trolling." Although I am really interested in blogging, YouTube, and Data Protection, I feel as though the internet is never going to stop growing and as a young actress and micro social media influencer, I should familiarise myself with online hate and how to cope and spread awareness about it before I delve into other aspects of the internet.

I often hear people who get hate online saying "I put myself out there so what should I expect?" and I wonder why should we have to expect this? Who are the people behind these accounts and why do they target who they target? What are their aims and what do they gain from trolling people? I have so many questions that I'm eager to find the answers to.

I also chose this mission because as my social media following grows, so will the hate. I have close to 7,000 followers on Instagram and a combined viewing of 8k views on YouTube. I am also on numerous television commercials, many online music videos, televised T.V shows, and a few short films that circulate the web. I am basically inviting trolls into my life. I do not believe I have 7,000 "friends" or those views are all supportive. I know most of my followers are just nosey and many of the views are are not supportive, but I really do enjoy it, so why should I stop?

It is not something I would ever let get the better of me but I know everyone is vulnerable on the internet and I want to be savvy when it comes to the trolling (that I may or may not get.) I remember getting a comment from a "troll" saying I was wearing "too much makeup", on a picture I had no makeup on... nice try?? The account had 0 followers, no name, or profile picture. It's easy for me to block, laugh, and forget about comments like that. It's not easy for everyone though! That's why I really want to do this mission. To have so much knowledge about online hate so I can spread awareness and learn to laugh even harder at it!
